Space Drug Factory: Varda Inks Deal with United Therapeutics for Orbital Manufacturing
In a breakthrough for commercial space manufacturing, Varda Space Industries has signed its first pharmaceutical customer, marking what the company calls 'the first commercial path to products made in space.'
The El Segundo, California-based startup will launch drugs from United Therapeutics into orbit, where microgravity conditions could produce novel crystal structures with improved stability and therapeutic properties.
'This is the first commercial path to products made in space,' said Michael Reilly, Varda's chief strategy officer. The partnership aims to reformulate existing drugs by growing crystals in weightlessness—a technique impossible on Earth.
Background
Until now, space-based drug experiments have been confined to small-scale government-backed projects on the International Space Station. Varda, founded in 2021 by Delian Asparouhov and ex-SpaceX engineer Will Bruey, is betting that cheaper and more frequent rocket launches will make orbital manufacturing economically viable.

United Therapeutics, led by CEO Martine Rothblatt, built its success on drugs for pulmonary arterial hypertension. Rothblatt, who previously worked on early telecommunications satellites, sees space as a natural next step. 'If orbital conditions permit, we may identify even more amazing versions of our drugs,' she said.

What This Means
Pharmaceutical companies constantly seek to extend drug patents by reformulating blockbusters—switching from pills to inhaled versions, for example. Varda offers a radical new tool: using space instead of nebulizers or nanoparticles to create entirely new molecular arrangements.
If successful, the strategy could yield drugs with dramatically different properties—potentially more potent, stable, or easier to administer. For United Therapeutics, it could extend the lifecycle of its lucrative franchise and fend off generic competition.
The broader implication is validation of the space manufacturing model. As rocket costs fall, other industries may follow pharma's lead, transforming orbit into a destination for materials science and production.
