Kazakhstan Extends Coursera Deal to Boost AI, Digital Skills for 100+ Universities
The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan has renewed its strategic partnership with online learning giant Coursera, embedding world-class for-credit courses into the nation's higher education system. The move aims to equip tens of thousands of students with critical skills in AI, data science, and cybersecurity, aligning with the country's AI-Sana initiative.
Under the renewed agreement, Kazakh universities will continue offering Coursera courses for official ECTS credit, bridging the gap between academic curricula and rapidly evolving labor market demands. The partnership now covers over 13,500 courses from more than 375 leading companies and universities globally.
‘A Quantum Leap’ for Workforce Readiness
“This renewal marks a quantum leap in our efforts to prepare every graduate for the digital economy,” said a Ministry spokesperson. “By integrating Coursera’s industry-recognized certifications directly into degree programs, we ensure our students are not just learning—but are job-ready.”

Coursera CEO Jeff Maggioncalda added: “Kazakhstan continues to set a global benchmark for how nations can systematically upskill their youth. We’re proud to deepen our commitment and support the Ministry’s vision of AI literacy for all.”
Background: From Pilot to Nationwide Integration
Since the initial partnership began in 2022, Coursera has become a cornerstone of Kazakhstan’s higher education strategy. More than 235,000 students across 100-plus universities have enrolled, earning over 500,000 course certificates.
To overcome language barriers, the Ministry collaborated with Coursera to translate over 4,000 courses—especially in AI, machine learning, and data science—into Kazakh. This ensures students can access top-tier content in their native tongue.
Key Pillars of the Renewed Partnership
- For-Credit Learning: Students earn official ECTS credits toward degrees by completing job-relevant certifications in fields like Finance, Engineering, and Cybersecurity.
- AI at Scale: Access to 1,100+ GenAI courses, including Google AI Essentials and Anthropic’s ‘Building with the Claude API,’ supports the AI-Sana initiative’s goal of foundational AI literacy for every graduate.
- Career Alignment: Courses are curated to meet the demands of the global digital economy, with a focus on human, digital, business, and AI skills.
What This Means for Kazakhstan’s Higher Education
The renewal signals a permanent shift away from traditional, static curricula toward dynamic, industry-driven learning. Students now have a direct pathway from the classroom to high-demand careers, with verified credentials recognized by employers worldwide.

For the Ministry, this partnership accelerates the modernization of higher education at a national scale. “We are not just adding courses—we are transforming how universities teach and how students learn,” the spokesperson emphasized.
The agreement also positions Kazakhstan as a regional hub for AI education. By equipping every graduate with GenAI fluency, the country aims to future-proof its workforce against rapid technological change.
Looking Ahead
With the renewed deal, Kazakh universities will continue to expand their use of Coursera for Campus. The Ministry plans to increase the number of for-credit pathways and further localize content into Kazakh and Russian.
As digital transformation reshapes global labor markets, Kazakhstan’s partnership with Coursera offers a replicable model for other nations seeking to bridge the gap between education and employment.
