Path of Exile 2's Endgame Revamp Marks Final Major Update Before 1.0 Release
The Final Major Update Before Full Launch
Grinding Gear Games has unveiled the Return of the Ancients expansion for Path of Exile 2, describing it as the last significant content drop before the game exits early access and reaches version 1.0 later this year. Game director Jonathan Rogers is eager to put questions about the release date to rest. “I want to get this game finished. I really, really do,” he said during a recent press event, expressing his desire to shift focus back to regular league development.

While no specific date has been confirmed for the 1.0 launch, Rogers indicated it will arrive shortly after ExileCon, which takes place in November. Until then, players can expect balance updates and possibly one or two mini-leagues, but patch 0.5.0—the Return of the Ancients expansion—is the final major overhaul before the full release.
A Streamlined Endgame Experience
The core of Return of the Ancients is a comprehensive rework of the game's endgame. Previously, after finishing the campaign, players entered a sprawling sandbox with little direction. The new update transforms this into a guided experience, complete with quests and boss fights that lead players through the interconnected mechanics of the Atlas world map.
More Intuitive and Customizable Systems
All endgame systems have been upgraded to be more intuitive and customizable. Players can now invest heavily into specific mechanics to earn powerful rewards, creating a more satisfying endpoint even for those not interested in an infinite grind. According to Rogers, patch 0.5.0 aims to make the game feel cohesive—no longer like two separate experiences (a linear campaign and a scattered endgame).
“We spent several months figuring out how to give the game a satisfying endpoint for players who aren’t interested in infinite grind,” Rogers explained. The result is a post-campaign journey that feels structured yet open to player choice.
The Road to 1.0
After Return of the Ancients drops on May 29, the development team will continue fine-tuning the game based on player feedback. The full 1.0 update will include the final two acts of the campaign and all ascendancies (sub-classes) for the existing character classes. However, only a few of the five previously announced new classes will be ready in time, meaning new weapon types like swords may also be delayed.

Rogers emphasized that the team is focused on delivering a complete experience with 1.0, even if it means some features arrive later. “I really, really do want to get this game finished,” he reiterated, hinting that once the full launch is out, the studio can return to its regular cycle of league-based expansions.
Leaving Early Access Behind
With Return of the Ancients, Path of Exile 2 will be ready to exit early access and become a free-to-play title. If past ExileCon events are any indication, the convention will likely reveal the exact release date. Until then, players can look forward to a much more directed endgame experience in patch 0.5.0.
As one of the most anticipated action RPGs in recent years, Path of Exile 2 has already garnered a dedicated player base during its early access phase. The Return of the Ancients expansion promises to bridge the gap between a gripping linear campaign and the deep, infinitely replayable endgame that fans expect. For those wondering when the journey will finally conclude, the answer is becoming clearer: later this year, after ExileCon.
What’s Next for Players
In the meantime, players can dive into the new endgame structure, explore the revamped Atlas, and start preparing for the full launch. Rogers hinted that after 1.0, the team will return to regular league development—a prospect he’s clearly excited about. “I want to get back to regular league development and not have all this other stuff going on,” he said.
With Return of the Ancients arriving on May 29, the countdown to 1.0 has officially begun. Whether you’re a veteran pathfinder or a newcomer eager to experience the complete saga, now is the time to delve into the world of Wraeclast and shape its future.
