Amazon Pulls Plug on Singapore Grocery Delivery
Amazon has abruptly ceased its Amazon Fresh grocery service in Singapore and shut down local fulfillment operations as of July 6, marking a strategic retreat from the city-state's competitive grocery market. The decision eliminates a small number of roles in Singapore, though the company retains its AWS, retail, and Global Selling businesses.

"This move reflects Amazon's focus on where it can win—cross-border e-commerce rather than last-mile grocery delivery in dense urban markets," said retail analyst Chen Wei of Singapore Management University.
What This Means for Singaporean Shoppers
Singaporean consumers will no longer have access to Amazon's local grocery delivery, including fresh produce and household staples. Instead, Amazon is betting that shoppers prefer US, Japanese, and German catalogues, leveraging its cross-border logistics network.
"Amazon is essentially saying it can't compete with local players like FairPrice and RedMart on fresh groceries, so it's doubling down on imported goods," commented logistics expert Priya Nair, author of E-Commerce in Southeast Asia.

Amazon launched Amazon Fresh in Singapore in 2019, investing heavily in local fulfillment centers and hiring delivery staff. The service initially aimed to challenge dominant local grocers and online platforms like GrabMart.
However, fierce competition, high operational costs, and lower-than-expected adoption forced the company to reassess. Competitors like FairPrice Group and Shopee have cemented their positions in Singapore's grocery market.

The closure signals a broader trend: global tech giants scaling back hyper-local services in favor of cross-border models with higher margins. Amazon's retreat may encourage local competitors to consolidate further.

"This is a win for Singapore's homegrown platforms, but it also reduces consumer choice in local groceries," Nair added. "Amazon will now focus on what it does best—selling international products at scale."
Remaining Operations
Amazon's AWS cloud division, retail marketplace, and Global Selling program (which helps Singapore merchants export) remain active. The company clarified that only roles tied to Amazon Fresh and local fulfillment are affected.
"Our commitment to Singapore's digital economy is unchanged," an Amazon spokesperson stated. "We continue to invest in AWS, cross-border commerce, and our marketplace."
